AY Oversight Hearing Delayed but Prep Continues
The legislative oversight hearing on Atlantic Yards that was
scheduled for April 24 has been delayed, but State Senator Bill Perkins, the
Harlem Democrat who will lead the hearing, visited Brooklyn on Saturday to view
the site and meet with locals. Norman
Oder covers the visit at Atlantic Yards Report; while rain impeded some of
the walking tour, Perkins received a full briefing from a group that included
both State Senator Velmanette Montgomery and City Council Member Letitia
James.
Perkins suggested that the upcoming hearing, besides
digging into the performance of the ESDC and MTA, would also tackle the question
of the controversial "blight" designation that continues to be a key element of the
legal challenge to the project's Environmental Impact Study.
According to Oder, Perkins promised a thorough review of where AY stands and
what should come next. Perkins pointed out that, in light of the economic
downturn, there are many questions about the viability of Atlantic Yards and
other projects, so “it’s appropriate and necessary from the perspective of the
public interest, to review where the project is at.”
That involves a look
at issues that may need to be reconsidered, modifications that may need to be
made, and what additional public resources are being considered for this
project. No new date has been set for the legislative oversight
hearing.
