United for Innovative Local Development's (BUILD) President James Caldwell
(right) with Bruce Ratner (center) and Michael Bloomberg(left) signing the
"Atlantic Yards Community Benefits Agreement" on June 27, 2005,
which has been shown, over
and over again, to be an agreement for certain, but not a "Community
Benefits Agreement.
(Though it purports to represent the community, and presumably should communicate
with the community online and elsewhere, BUILD's
website [update: the BUILD website is now back up in all of its outdated
2004 glory] appears to be down, but we have some information about the organization
here.) |
Brooklyn
United for Innovative Local Development's (BUILD) President James Caldwell
(right) on November 19, 2007 helping Senator Carl Kruger (left) "shut
down" a public information session held by the Coney Island Development
Corporation (CIDC) to discuss the Bloomberg Administration's redevelopment
plans.
Amongst other statements by Kruger at the CIDC meeting, presumably supported,
now, by Caldwell were:
"This is a backdoor approach to eminent domain!" He also said
"he will not allow Coney Island to be given away without community
input."
and
The Brooklyn Paper reports:
"Score one for the good guys. We won the ground war. You made a point
tonight, and that is that Bloomberg isn’t going to push his Manhattan
plans on Brooklyn without hearing from Brighton Beach, Coney Island and
Sheepshead Bay.”
The slogan on the yellow cap worn by Mr. Caldwell and the busloads Kruger
brought in:
How much $?
How long?
Who pays?
That's a long way from:
Jobs.
Housing and
Hoops.
More from the Brooklyn Paper here.
More ironies here,
here
and here.
